decorating with flowering branches

I think it's safe to say that winter has gone on long enough but if we can't get the outdoors to cooperate we can always start spring early indoors. A simple and beautiful way to do this is to decorate any room with flowering branches. Start by choosing any woody shrub or tree that naturally blooms in the spring. Some of my favorites are forsythia, quince, dogwood, pussy willow and cherry. Wait until the branches are showing signs of buds, the bigger the better for faster opening. Trim the ends at an angle with pruners, a knife or very sharp shears and immediately place the stems in lukewarm water with a floral preservative in a vase, jar, or any vessel that is watertight. Keep the branches out of direct sunlight, mist them frequently and change the water often for best results.
